Two Carols

The origin of this melody is in plainchant, and can be found in manuscript as far back as the 10th Century.

Divinum Mysterium

This carol from Germany first appeared in print in 1850. It may date back to the 16th Century.

Maria durch ein Dornwald ging

Dona nobis pacem

The lyric translates from the Latin as “Grant us peace”. The provenance of the music is unknown. Musically, this is a canon in three parts. The guitar arrangement is constructed essentially by introducing the parts one at a time. There are some minor adjustments made from the original, mainly to suit playability on the guitar.

In a Garden so Green

A guitar arrangement of this traditional Scottish song.

(score, pdf)

There is a tradition of a cappella choral singing in New England and the rural South , which dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, and continues to this day. This is an instance  of the early American ideals of innovating to make an activity possible for everyone, and independent of European tradition.

In this arrangement, I have tried to maintain the feeling of stark simplicity, which the original vocal version has.
